The Switch 2 Is Here, But Is It What We Wanted?

It’s been months since the Nintendo Switch 2 hit shelves back in June, and the verdict is finally settling in. After years of rumors, we have it: a $450 powerhouse that delivers on the core promise of its predecessor, but with the horsepower we’ve all been craving.

The leap in performance is, frankly, a massive relief. Seeing massive open-world games like Elden Ring and Assassin’s Creed Shadows running smoothly on a handheld is something the original Switch could only dream of. The new 1080p 120Hz LCD screen is a crisp, fluid upgrade, even if some of us were holding out for an OLED.

Thankfully, Nintendo didn’t abandon our libraries. The console is almost entirely backward compatible, meaning that giant backlog of Switch 1 games wasn’t all for nothing.

But it hasn’t been a flawless honeymoon. While launch titles like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond are stunning, the console has had its share of growing pains. A recent system update just reportedly blocked many popular third-party docks, forcing players to shell out for Nintendo’s official (and more expensive) model.

As we head into the holiday season with bundles for Mario Kart World and Pokémon Legends: Z-A flying off shelves, the Switch 2 has cemented its place. It’s not just a sequel; it’s the high-performance hybrid we always wanted, even if it comes with that classic, stubborn Nintendo charm.
