US Ambassador Sergio Gor Announces India-US Javelin Missile Deal
India has signed an agreement with America to buy the famous Javelin anti-tank missile system. US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, announced this on August 28. He wrote on X, “BIG news! India plans to buy the battle-tested Javelin anti-tank system. This is a great step forward in the U.S.-India defense relationship and opens the door to co-production possibilities. The engagement between our two nations is at record-high levels!”
The US Embassy in India also confirmed that the Indian Army has signed a Letter of Offer and Acceptance (LOA) to buy the Javelin system through the US Foreign Military Sales process. Ambassador Sergio Gor said, “This agreement reflects a defense partnership that is growing deeper, more capable, and more consequential. The Javelin agreement demonstrates the depth of US support for the Indian Army and creates new opportunities for our defense industries to work together”.
What is the Javelin Missile?
Javelin is a highly renowned anti-tank guided missile. It is man-portable, meaning a single soldier can carry its launcher and fire it. Jointly manufactured by two major US aerospace companies, Lockheed Martin and RTX (Raytheon), its defining features include:
- Fire-and-Forget: Once the soldier locks onto the target and fires, the missile tracks the target independently. The operator can instantly hide or relocate to avoid counter-fire.
- Top-Attack Profile: The missile arcs up into the air and strikes the tank from above, where the armor is traditionally the weakest.
- Soft-Launch Design: This allows the missile to be safely fired from enclosed positions, such as buildings or bunkers.
This missile is currently utilized by the US Army, US Marine Corps, and numerous NATO countries. It gained global prominence during the Ukraine war, where Ukrainian forces successfully used Javelin missiles to counter Russian armored vehicles.
How Big is the Deal?
The exact value and quantity of the latest agreement were not officially disclosed by the US Embassy in its announcement. However, some recent reports estimate the deal at around $45.7 million (roughly Rs 292 crore) for around 60 missiles.
Because the official US announcement did not disclose the final scale of the agreement, the exact number of missiles and final value should be treated carefully. (Note: In November 2025, the US approved a possible sale to India that included Javelin missile systems; that earlier approval was separate from the latest finalized agreement announced in August 2026.
Why is this Deal Important?
This agreement is significant for three main reasons:
